Updated: Aug 17, 2020

Our guide to a great getaway. From top destinations, restaurants and hotels, to culture, sightseeing and facts.

1. Olympia Park, Olympia Tower and BMW World

The Olympic Park in Munich was inaugurated in 1972 in order to host the global Olympic Games. The open-topped arena manages to hold a staggering 70,000 people at one time and is situated on the outskirts of the city centre and has direct travel on the easy U-Bahn which travels from the city centre. It is a sight to behold alongside the matching Olympic Tower (Olympiaturm) and across the road from the iconic BMW World. The Olympic Tower is over 290m in height and has a high-end restaurant sitting graciously 181m above ground level, hence the name Restaurant 181. This restaurant and the museum on the floor above, spin 360 degrees clockwise, to ensure that wherever you may be sitting, you will have the perfect view of the surround area and the beautiful city of Munich within an hour. BMW word and its neighbouring museum are the home of BMW. The massive, modern and geometric structure sits proudly on the edge of the Olympic Park - so its not far to walk - and display the past, present and the future of the multinational company that is Bayrische Motor Werke.

2. Viktualienmarkt

Viktualienmarkt (Victorian Market) is a square between Heiliggeist-Kirche and Frauenstraße. It was a former farmer's market stretching 18,591 and there are around 110 vendors who sell everything from fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, bread, flowers and so on...

3. Marienplatz

Marienplatz is a big city square which is home to two separate town halls on either side. A fun fact is that during Christmas, a extremely large Christmas market is held on the premesis where you can drink Glühwein (Mulled Wine) and eat roasted almonds as well as check out the countless different stalls which are on offer, ranging from chocolate to wood carving. A wonderful pace to visit however at any time of year, as there are so many lovely surrounding buildings, restaurants and high-end fashion shops.

4. Residenz

Residenz was a royal palace before it turned into a museum displaying Bavaria's most coveted treasures. It is architecturally stunning, and you are able to see the beautiful room decorations and displays of the former royal collections. It holds a massive 130 rooms and also has the Cuvilliétheater as a part of the whole building. Furthermore, opposite of Residenz is the Belstaff Cafe where you can have a gorgeous drink of floral lemonade whilst admiring the pretty impressive building from the 1st floor.

5. MAXIMILIANSTRAßE

Maximilianstraße is the largest and main shopping street in Munich which spans a total distance of 1.2km. It is filled with designer shops and boutiques like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel etc... It is also where the Munich Four Seasons Hotel is situated, a fantastic and world-renowned hotel which offers only the best service. However, if the Four Seasons isn't for you, another premium hotel called the Hotel Bayerische Hof is closely located on a different street, yet attached to a designer outlet where brands such as Christian Laboutain and Balenciaga can be found.

6. Echt Jetzt

Echt Jetzt is a speciality Gluten Free Bakery which is located on Barerstraße and offers food such as Brötchen, cheesecake and cinnamon rolls as well as many other delicacies which are exceptionally delicious. Here at Ästhetik Magazine, we like to recognise the companies that go above and beyond to offer a special chance for disadvantaged people to have the opportunity to try something new and we respect their decision to brighten the days of intolerants or sufferers of Coeliac disease so that they are able taste the culture and try something they hadn't tried before.

7. Kunstareal

Munich is lucky enough to have one of the most influential art districts in the world. The Kunstareal offers a wide range of various galleries and museums as well as multiple artistic statues which are placed around the near area. A great point of interest, is that Echt Jetzt is located nearby for a quick snack whilst on the go. It is also for people who may seem less interested in the arts as it offers a vast amount of information and culture about the iconic city of Munich.

8. Englischer Garten

Finally, the Englischer Garten is Munich's main Park which is home to the Eisbach (ice river) which on certain days, around the year van be found with surfers catching the current as the river begins to enter the city. This is one of Munich's biggest tourist attractions due to having large areas of grassland and beautiful monuments on the top of the main hill, towards the centre, it is a prime location for a picnic and a catch-up with friends.
