LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS

How music responds to the couture we see come out of the house of McCartney.

Hinted to be associated with Paul's daughter, the song written fifty years ago, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" encapsulates the artistic characteristics of the designer that we now see in the present day. With countless collections and runways stretching across the globe, the designer has used this creativity to influence her designs over a twenty-one year period. Always persisting with new and exciting designs that grasp the attention of the passer-by, continuing to grow the brand and in-turn push the concept and actions of accountability and most importantly, creativity.

In recent years, the brand has come out with a collection inspired by 'The Beatles' which is currently available in-store and online. It seeks to shine light upon the designers' roots and her musical heritage. Growing up a daughter of one of the world's most influential music artists is one thing, being able to carry on the lineage and create something that's equally as beautiful is another. In this case, Stella has proven herself worthy of her father's "hand-me-downs" in the company that's after her name. Legacy is seen throughout the brand, in the name, collections and backlog and for the customer this is subconsciously known. Does it aid the growth of the business? Absolutely, but would Stella have been able to grow her own company through the medium of design and college funds without the help of her story, without a doubt.

Sustainability is so current in this given moment, and bigger than ever, nothing is more important in the world of fashion right now as much as sustainability and inclusivity are.

Let us take a closer look at the garments in the Beatles-inspired collaboration. Before anything else, the 'Yellow Submarine' honoured its 50th anniversary, to which Stella McCartney collaborated with the German artist Heinz Edelmann to illustrate warm, and vibrant imagery to encapsulate the song as artwork. At the same time, the brand had the single digitally remastered for a "modern audience", which they left to the imagination... younger? The brand had drafted in four up-and-coming musical artists to help with the remastering and Alsop to model the newest line of the company. The collection is named after and emblazoned with the iconic title of song by The Beatles,"ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE". Psychedelic and layered with badges and graphics, the collection isn't far from a trance. A lilac knitwear piece with the title written down the front in various colours is one of the collection's staple pieces, oversized for a comforting effect, and made from organic cotton/wool, the stripes seen lower down give the sweater another edge to the design, yet still epitomising the colourful principles of the band and the timeless music.

Music impacts the company more than you would think, with Stella personally curating each of the playlists heard in-store to suit the individual environment in which you are shopping in. It is a part of the brand and without it, the cooperation wouldn't be in the same place as it is today. It is seen to set the tone of the brand, whilst instigating the name of her father simultaneously, which subtly reminds the consumer of the brand's heritage. No matter how far the designer will come, she will always be linked back to her roots and the music that unfolded back in the 60s before she was even born. A sensation to the nation and a rock to the globe, the designer is following in the footsteps as The Beatles, inducing an influence worldwide, inspiring to dress creativity, with a minimalist approach and to spread awareness of the sustainable impact the brand is making whilst doing so.
