AS HOTTER WEATHER ROLLS IN AND LONDON PREPARES TO SPEND TIME WITH FRIENDS ON PICNIC BLANKETS OUT IN THE PARKS, THE RE-INVENTION OF A CULT CLASSIC HAS MERGED BACK INTO SHOREDITCH. GABRIEL WINTER GETS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THESE FUNKY ACCESSORIES, MADE THEIR DEBUT ONCE AGAIN.
As the heat rises and there's a close to no clouds in the sky, the bright sun glares down on central London. You think to yourself, that sounds lush... but is that really the reality of a London summer? Amid the excitement of your new summer wardrobe, lest us forget important staple pieces or neglect them as necessities that mightn't add much to a look. Well, you'd be wrong! Let's explore the beautiful world of spectacular sunnies.
Last year, temperatures were in the low forties and the stuffy city air too sat low on the public, we all felt it and it came out of the blue, now way to prepare. Though this year, Londoners have already come in clutch with their use of lighter, airier garments. Thin materials like linen allow the pieces to breathe, along with their wearer amid hotter temperatures, meaning less sweating and a better-enjoyed day of wear! Though this season, there is something a little more 'in your face' about East London fashion, that being sunglasses. Shoreditch is known for its 'out there' approach too dressing, carefully curated looks stroll on past at every corner, often adorned by an eclectic mix of rather funky specs.
As recent collections have been fashion-hitting the store shelves, sunglasses have been in full flow, Loewe being at the forefront of this seemingly normal trend. You might be asking yourselves, "What's so special about sunglasses, aren't they always a cult classic?" You'd be right, although this year, the quirkier, the better.
Offering something different from the regular frame, Loewe continues to shine under the creative direction of Jonathan Anderson Anderson, Loewe has been long known to push boundaries and these rather bizarre sunglasses cement just that. As mentioned, Loewe has pioneered this accessory advancement with a few new staples added to their accessory department. Take their 'Inflated rectangular' sunglasses for example; a unique and otherworldly approach to fashion under the sun. Almost balloon-animal-like these fashion statements have the fashion world in a chokehold. Available in five colours, tortoise- shell through red, yellow, white, red and black; there's one for everyone. Compared to other high-end brands like Balenciaga or Gucci for the same price these new, eclectic and fun accessories are quite the conversation starter and not to be ruled out. These are not the only specs Loewe has released which have raised brows; flowers, lips, hearts and even eye masks, are some of the few designs the brand has thought up. The re-invention of the average accessory has never been more exciting. Balenciaga has been at the top of the accessory game for a while now, constantly imagining new and futuristic ways to add to any outfit. Over the years some of their signature shapes have stuck within the fashion communities, one being the iconic 'swift oval'. Swooping up from the bridge of the nose and over the ears, the shape elongates the face, creating a fox-eye-like image. Worn by
Kendall Jenner at last year's Vanity Fair Oscar's party, she rocked the classic black, with a matching Balenciaga gown proving that elegance and edge really do go hand-in-hand. Though Balenciaga does create some safe options, there are a few that push the boundaries, saying that, East London doesn't seem to mind. Their new 'side x-pander cat' glasses add that edge to any other summer outfit with angled arms that lead to a partly non-framed lens, framing the face and grabbing the attention of passers-by, there's no looking back when it comes to the perfect pair of shades.
Finally, it is impossible to not mention the classics, RayBans. You really can't go wrong with a timeless, classic wayfarer, picturing the upper half of the face with a crisp square frame now available with built-in cameras connected to your Facebook account so you can post your summer pics to your story as soon as you see them. And that's not all, speakers are strategically positioned before the ear so that you can enjoy your seasonal playlists out and about without the hassle of headphones. With three designs to pick matched with your choice of clear, sun or transition lenses, personalisation is key, allowing you to curate your look based on how you dress, especially for the warmer weather.
So, no matter where you find yourself or whatever the weather, there's an abundance of shades to choose from. Practically speaking or not, these designs aren't to disappoint and are definitely a talking point. A simple pop of colour or a unique frame go a long way when picking out the perfect picnic fit, having the ability to elevate even the simplest ensemble and a staple must-have whilst in the snug, artsy district of Shoreditch.
