STELLA MCC"ART"NEY

Updated: Oct 14, 2022

Art and design truly go hand in hand. Especially in the case of Stella.

After having grown up around glitz and glamour, artistic and musical inspirations weren't hard to find. When thought about, as always fashion and art go hand-in-hand. In terms of McCartney, her designs have been longed for by the likes of the Saatchi Gallery in London, to which they eventually collaborated on in the spring of 2020 in the form of life-drawing, during the #SaatchiTakeover.

On the topic of this Saatchi Gallery collaboration, in the theme of the 'human figure', the designer's social medias offered the opportunity to allow their large following to take part in coming together in creating pieces of art drawn around the supermodel Malgosia Bela. Stella McCartney aims to bring people together ands assemble them to understand and adapt their love for a certain thing as a group, pairing up to share thoughts and beliefs of other based around one main topic, fashion, art and sustainability.

During this time, the public were able to discover the creativity being shared during the lockdown period, brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic via the brand's international website. Further including more and more people to experience the world of art through the medium of fashion.

In 2020, Stella McCartney unveiled her 'A-Z Manifesto' collection, bringing attention to what and who inspired her in the past, to make her (just that little bit more) who she is today. And an example, the letter, 'A' stands for accountability, something that anyone can see, is held dear to the heart and ethos of the company. The idea of taking charge of your own actions, owning what you have done to affect the natural environment and finally taking accountability of the impact that you have made, whether it be good or bad.

Another example from this long list of meaningful words associated with artwork is the letter 'E', which stands for effortless. It is an obvious characteristic of Stella McCartney's womenswear, timelessness and effortlessness. "They are made with 100% traceable, forest-friendly viscose sourced from sustainably managed, certified forests in Sweden" once again induces the idea of the fact that this company is always ahead of the times, yet always finding this artistic style for their clothing. It is so impressive to clientele that a brand of this standard can juggle these two balls at the same time, and still make it "effortless".

Something that you might not know about the brand is that on the top floor of the Bond Street located store in London, Stella's personal collection is exhibited there for the customers to view and take inspiration from, just as she was inspired by the likes of Jeff Koons, Olafur Eliasson and Sam Taylor-Johnson. Colour and sculpture definitely have an impact on the design of the garments, with the iconic Falabella Bag, available in multiple colour-ways and fabrics. Such options and styles show that art is never to be put under the table, but is out on top to create these iconic designs.

Art doesn't hold the same amount of impact as music does in the direction that the collections go in; it seems to be a muse, an inspiration dedicated towards sculptural design, not only in the neon-garments, but also seen in the design of the individual store fronts and interiors. The private collection is showcased, and shown to the world, never forgotten about but does it hold the same value as music does to designer? No, and we can see this from limited collections and the designers' past. It is influential but not-at-all the most accredited genesis of the brand which we know and love today.
